I wish I could help you, user, I do. I know, we ask you to remember a lot of passwords for a lot of different systems. I know, sometimes you forget. Fortunately, for the sake of security, I don’t have access to your password. (OK, I guess it’s not so fortunate for you.)
Secure systems are secure precisely because only you know your password. Only you can access your email, your bank account, your cell phone. Well, that’s the theory anyway.
So while I can’t tell you your password, I can reset it – as long as I have access to the system in question.
When I reset your password, please take note that the password I give you is now known as the “Old Password.” (Just trust me on this.) When your system asks you to type in the “Old Password,” use that one – because neither of us know your old Old password. (Otherwise, why would you be calling?)
The “New password” is the one you get to create. Be creative, because you don’t want anyone to guess it!
We tech-heroes can only do so much to keep you secure. Please know that security standards (like laws) are meant to protect you, not control you.
