Episode 9: Please Don’t Pass the Password

You logged into your computer at 9:00pm.

You started deleting important work files, and sending angry emails to your boss’s bosses. You sent a threatening email to the President himself!

Wait, that wasn’t you? But it was your email account and your computer login. All of the evidence I see is enough to convict you of terrible things. If it wasn’t you, then who was it?

(Maybe it was your co-worker friend Sally who got fired last week, the one you shared your passwords with?)

There isn’t a ton of evidence to convict Sally, because she denied it all. Most organizations require staff to sign paperwork saying they will not share their logins and will keep them secure. The fault still lies on you.

As your local tech-hero, I want you to be fully aware of the dangers of sharing your passwords. Your accounts make up your digital identity. If you log into your bank site, it will allow you to transfer money. If Sally logs into your bank site, it will allow her to transfer money. Your email account doesn’t know you from Sally. Neither does your computer.

In short: In the cyber world, you ARE your accounts.

Guard your passwords well.
