It is believed that the only way to 100% protect yourself from mal-intenders on the internet is to never use the internet. Or a credit card. Or communicate with anyone outside of your electricity-free hut in a remote part of the world.
The reality is, all Americans are “online” whether we realize it or not. Whenever you interact with a store, a company, or a computer, you are building your cyber profile.
These companies are required to protect your information. Some do. Others may choose to sell it, or not protect it adequately. The law can punish companies when laws are violated, but the internet is difficult to regulate, especially when you’re interacting with mal-intenders overseas.
You see, the world wide web is world-wide. Tech-heroes across the globe are battling to keep you protected, but we are only as strong as the weakest link in the network. (An outdated computer, an un-secure website, an employee posting their password on a sticky note…)
The US Government created a site to help tech-users stay safe online. Read the articles. Ask questions when you encounter questionable websites. Guard your personal information, and remain careful and vigilant with your data on the net.
With great connectedness comes great responsibility.
Stay safe, tech-user.
