Episode 56: Surviving a Lockdown

The month is March 2020 and the world is currently on lockdown because of a human-spread virus. A “Stay at Home Order” has been issued for most of the country. Activities like eating out, shopping, going to the gym, and visiting with loved ones can no longer be done in person. Technology can provide alternatives – but do you know how to use them?

For some who have grown up with technology, the transition has been easy. Need to order a pizza? There’s an app for that. Want to work out? There are many apps to choose from. Playing games with friends? Talking to family across the country? Ordering groceries? The App Store has them all.

For others who think App is simply another word for “appetizer,” the transition may be a bit more difficult. You may be unaware of how advanced technology has become. Long gone are the days of phone books and long-distance codes (for most people.) For many (not all) services, there may just be an application that can help.

What IS an App?

Apps – or applications – are programs that can be downloaded onto your phones, tablets, and computers. They are typically purchased from an “app store” and can be downloaded instantly.

Why would I download an App?

Apps are typically optimized for use on your device. While websites may appear clunky and may not display well on your cell phone, apps can provide a simplified interface for accomplishing goals.

What are some examples of Apps?

Are you looking for a good workout? Are you wanting to learn a new language or skill? Are you searching for new recipes, new clothes, or new tools? Do you need to order groceries, or takeout, or a gift for your mom? Do you wish to pass the downtime with a new book, game or TV show? Do you need special software to work from home or to talk to a loved one across the world?

I guarantee, there’s an app for that.

How do I download Apps?

The app store will differ depending on your device. Apple devices use the Apple app store. Windows devices use the Windows app store. Android devices use the Android app store. Laptops may use a different store than tablets by the same company, because their operating system is different.

Each app store has its own searchable index to help you accomplish almost any goal you can think of. The index provides ratings, reviews, and the cost of each app. Many applications are free, but offer a paid version with additional features. Some applications replace older versions of software (like Microsoft’s Office suite) and require a subscription.

Each app store requires ties an account to your device, so you can only download apps on devices that you own. Some apps allow you to download the same app on multiple devices, as long as your account is on the device.

How will this help me survive the quarentine?

Humans are social creatures who need mental stimulation to stay healthy. While it is unfortunate that the world is currently on lockdown, we can still find ways to stay active and safe while accomplishing our goals thanks to modern technology. (And it’s easier than you may think!)
